Thanks for organizing!
Great choice Simon, thanks for doing this!
I read Kallocain, which really deserves to be more popular:
https://wordsandpeace.com/2023/04/10/book-review-for-the-1940-club-kallocain/
It seems like a person could easily and happily JUST read just books from 1940. It’s like a desert island year!
My first post is about Pigeon Pie, by Nancy Mitford. https://thewhippleline.wordpress.com/2023/04/11/1940-club-pigeon-pie-by-nancy-mitford/
It really is a delicious reading year!
My first review for the 1940 club is Sad Cypress. So far, I’m sticking to tried and tested but I’m branching out into the unknown tomorrow
https://witchyreading.wordpress.com/2023/04/11/sad-cypress-1940club/
Yay, finally got around to reading and reviewing my first one, The Invention of Morel. https://findingtimetowrite.wordpress.com/2023/04/11/1940club-the-invention-of-morel/
However, I intend to keep going even once this week is over!
Here are The Corinthian by Georgette Heyer and Blue Willow by Doris Gates

Glad Becky did Pat the Bunny – I was describing this book to some coworkers last month and they stared at me blankly. I needed some validation!
I was thinking about that Goudge, Simon, having recently pilgrimaged to her home in Wells.

Hi Simon,
My second entry is Who Pays the Piper by Dora Amy Elles
http://thebookdecoder.com/2023/04/11/who-pays-the-piper-by-dora-amy-elles/
My review of Sad Cypress by Agatha Christie. https://blbooks.blogspot.com/2023/04/72-sad-cypress.html
Hi, Simon, I read Three Early Stories by J. D. Salinger for the club based on a list in Goodreads, although I have noticed that their dates are not always accurate. After I read it, I saw that only two of the three stories were published in 1940. The other was published in 1943. I don’t know if you want to count it for the club or not, but here is the link. I read it in good faith: https://whatmeread.wordpress.com/2023/04/11/review-2153-1940-club-three-early-stories/
My next review for 1940 is Betsy-Tacy by Maud Hart Lovelace. https://zero-to-eight.blogspot.com/2023/04/87-betsy-tacy.html
I was going to leave the link to my post, but you’ve beat me to it! Thank you to both you and Karen for hosting these lovely reading weeks!

I just put up something from e. e. cummings’ 50 Poems, with links to some other 1940 poems I’ve read:
https://reesewarner.blogspot.com/2023/04/e-e-cummings-1940club.html

https://witchyreading.wordpress.com/2023/04/13/the-power-and-the-glory-1940club/

Here’s some nonfiction for you, The Big Sea, a memoir by Langston Hughes: https://whatmeread.wordpress.com/2023/04/14/review-2156-1940-club-the-big-sea/
One more: The Disappearance of General Jason by P.C. Wren
https://ahotcupofpleasureagain.wordpress.com/2023/04/14/1940-club-the-disappearance-of-general-jason-by-p-c-wren/
And here is my second link – Raymond Postgate’s Verdict of Twelve:
https://sconesandchaiseslongues.blogspot.com/2023/04/for-1940club-verdict-of-twelve-by.html
Here’s my contribution. A well-received historical novel set in the New France of the late-17th/early-18th centuries, it was once considered by Hollywood as a sort of successor to Gone With the Wind. Sadly, it has yet to reach the screen.

https://thewhippleline.wordpress.com/2023/04/17/1940-club-the-heart-is-a-lonely-hunter-carson-mccullers/
Also, noting just here in the comments that I’m halfway through Cheerfulness Breaks In by Angela Thirkell (1940), and it is truly a joy to read. I ran out of time to finish it and review it for the club year but I’m loving reading it, and I think pretty much anyone who reads this blog would feel the same way. Lots of actually very funny moments and dialogue, in the midst of an organized chaos of preparing for war – putting up blackout, taking in evacuee children and schools, training in first aid, sewing circles, etc.
This has been so fun and interesting! Thanks for all the great reviews everyone!
My two are here: https://bookishbeck.wordpress.com/2023/04/14/sapphira-and-the-slave-girl-portrait-of-the-artist-as-a-young-dog-1940club/
