I’m heading away from the blog until just after Easter, so I will give warning now that the 1940 Club is just around the corner – time to ready your book or books, if you haven’t done yet!
For those new to this – every six months Karen and I ask people to read books published in the same year and put reviews online wherever you put reviews (blog, GoodReads, Instagram, etc). Any sort of book from anywhere in the world is welcomed – the only rule is that it was first published in 1940.
(If you’re looking for a tip… Miss Hargreaves was published that year!)
I’m really excited to see how the club week turns out. Not long now!
Can’t wait – such a wonderful range of books to choose from!! :D
Really looking forward to it Simon!
I’m excited! This is my first time, and there are a lot of interesting books to choose from. I picked two light ones, to accompany my another quite dreary book for Zoladdiction.
I’m hoping to at least read Borges’s short story Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius for this, but any other tome will depend on the time I’ve got left between now and that week!
Ooh – I have Ambler and Greene on the shelves… I’ll try to fit one of them in.

I have already read my five books for this club, and Miss Hargreaves was one of them, based on your many recommendations of it! It was fun.
I may join in this time. I am not doing any yearlong challenges, but this shortie one really appeals. Now, I need to explore what to read.
Ok I suppose I. Hold cheat as I have already read Miss Hargreaves but will see if I can find another one
So exciting! I have three Dean Street Press books to read, having handily gamed my TBR by asking for them for my birthday once I knew what this Year was going to be!
Do you know the photo source? Perhaps only a Canadian would notice the calendar. :^))
Oh I don’t! I just searched royalty-free images for 1940s book-related pics – I did spot that it was a bank rather than a library, but hoped I would get away with it :D
Looking forward to it! I’m hoping to do at least a Saint novel & a Ngaio Marsh mystery. Thanks for hosting!
Ooops, I was sick in March, that must be the reason I missed the announcement. Don’t have a book on my TBR pile from that year, either, so I will have to postpone this a litte. But, if I’m allowed to, I will take part and post my review later.
Of course – sorry to hear you weren’t well
Thanks. Well, after avoiding it for three years, the old Covid had caught us, luckily a mild version but still …
So, I ordered my book, Paris France by Gertrude Stein, and posted an announcement here. I will definitely get back to you once I read the book.
