There's some fascinating stuff there, Simon, but I need an explanation of what middlebrow means in this context. I know Virginia Woolf used the term rather scathingly,(and unfairly, suggesting people who were 'middlebrows', people who enjoy accessible fiction, had no mind of their own, and I'd use the term to describe a lot of the fiction I read, but here it seems to mean something else.

Hope you had a good time, look forward to hearing more.

I just saw that the person who was talking about EH Young was none other than my ex-colleague and erstwhile friend Emma Liggins! I am more than ever dying to know what she had to say… and long to know what yours was about, too.

Oh my goodness, it's been such a long while since I had to go to a conference like this! I confess I was a very bad attendee, and often used to slip out to go shopping. Shopping is always so much more fun when you really should be doing something else…

Hope there were some inspiring papers.

I've just been to three conferences in two weeks but I would have liked to attend a couple of the sessions in yours.

1B, 5A and 10A. I would of course have come to listen to your paper too.

I would've been torn after lunch on Thursday as to which one to go to – Agatha Christie or Baroness Orczy. I was mainly reading descriptions and then noticed you were speaking! I don't suppose anybody recorded the lectures? Like Dark Puss, I would definitely have come to listen to you.

I was very disappointed to miss this conference, especially as it was on home ground! And I would have loved to hear your paper…

I already made my middlebrow joke on Facebook so I won't do it again here. I looked through the schedule and nothing was really catching my eye. Then I saw the word "spinster" and my eye popped over to the left side of the page only to see one Simon Thomas as the presenter of that particular paper. How funny and fitting that the one title that caught my eye was yours.
