Firefox… Schmirefox, more like.

I don’t know about you, but my Firefox is being awful.  It crashes every five minutes, which would be really bad in a car, and is also pretty bad (though not as bad) in a whatever-you-call-internetty-things.  Umm… wow.  Sometimes I pretend to be more Luddite than I am, in the curious belief that it makes me seem endearing, but right now I can’t remember what you call IE, Firefox, etc.  Hmm.  This must be how computer geeks feel when they can’t remember if it’s ‘Jane Austen’ or ‘Jane Austin’.  That’s the sort of question which keeps Bill Gates awake at night, I imagine.

So, anyway, I’ve switched to Google Chrome, and I’m desperately trying to remember all the passwords that Firefox had kindly (and probably unsecurely) been memorising for me.  Nymeth helped me over Twitter to put in a bookmarks toolbar and, in lieu of anything else bookish to say tonight, I thought I’d show you a screenshot of my bookmarks.  You might well have to enlarge it somehow…  If your blog isn’t there, it’s not because I don’t love you… it’s because I love these guys more (heehee!)

Actually, I’ve already added someone since I took this screenshot.  So… it’s probably you ;)

Oh, I did have one book-related thing to say.  I’ve got hold of an Australian novel!  I’ll be joining in Australian Literature Month!  Are you?

I abandoned Firefox for Chrome some time ago in absolute exasperation with FF — Chrome has never given me any trouble (so far touch wood and all that). Good luck with the passwords, though.

It seems like most people are heading in this direction… I do miss my colourful header, though. (And Harriet, coincidentally you really are the other blogger I added to my tab! Loved your thoughts on Shirley Jackson.)

Our browser is Firefox, and we've not had any problems with it, touch wood!

I use Firefox, IE8, Chrome, Amaya and sometimes other browsers (e.g. Opera) as the fancy (and the vagiaries of the OS and the remote site) takes me. I'm impressed if you can rely on a single browser for all you wish to do (X509 certificate handling is one area where things do seem sometimes to be a little browser specific.)

Good luck – to answer your final question, no I won't; have fun!

I probably know less than you about this sort of thing. I was switched (note it was done for me) to Chrome last year, and I use it faithfully for email and most of my internet shopping – it is supposed to be more secure than Safari. BUT, I like the way Safari has a page for me to see my most frequently visited pages and puts little stars in the corner to tell me if someone has updated the page. So, I use two browsers for that reason. (And dh tries not to roll his eyes.)
As for the colorful header, you should be able to get a nice one for Chrome. I had a "Cath Kidston theme" for a while (not what you're looking for, I'm guessing ;) ), but I've had to switch that. My beloved Longhorns came out with one, so now it is a lovely burnt orange with a Longhorn head at the top (typed as only a true sports fan can type ;) ).
I'm not going to make Australian month – unless I have an Australian author on the shelf that I don't know about? Good luck with your computer changes!

    Gerladine – good luck! I hadn't until recently…

Peter – I don't think you need to be impressed, since what I wish to do online is not very complex! All I'm looking for is a browser that doesn't crash… and I've never heard of X509 certificate handling… in fact, I've never heard of certificate handling!

Susan – I shall have to investigate where Chrome is hiding their pretty headers.. it generally all seems a bit unintuitive, which is irksome. Oh well…

For Aussie Lit Month, I’ll be re-reading one of my fav books, Peter Carey’s True History of the Kelly Gang,. I’ll be reading it this time looking out for references to the country and its characteristics, seeing if the book tells a wider story about the country and its people. I hope to post a write up on it on my blog for Australia Day Jan 26 if I get through it in time.

I’m afraid all the tec talk has gone way over my head – I think I genuinely am a Luddite…or perhaps just a little useless.

I have yet to read any Peter Carey, although I've heard great things. One of my colleagues is very keen that I try him! And Australia Day is perfect for your blog review :)

Firefox (version 9.0.1 to be precise) is working fine for me. I tried Chrome but didn't like the rather large address bar. I also don't like using the same company for everything. Google might not be evil (if we take them at their word), but it doesn't mean I want them running my whole online life. I use Gmail but make a point of using other search engines. I'm funny like that!

There are some lovely Chrome extensions for integrating Google Reader. When I briefly used Chrome, I rather liked one called Feed Squares. This might be a better way than using bookmarks to gain quick access to your favourite blogs, since the addresses will be saved in Google Reader it should be harder to lose them? (Feed Squares link: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ddkahgkblobiogkkeedfnjkldecloidi).

Well, I use Yahoo email, so at least I'm keeping Google away from my email! (or do they own that now?)

You sound pretty clever to me! At this very minute my biggest computer issue is trying to keep home row on my keyboard free of cheesy nachos. Seriously though, hopefully Chrome will spare you loads of frustration. You can't have things crashing with all the research you have to do, all the best!

Firefox is ridiculous now – crashes before it's loaded any page. I'm more worried about my whole computer dying – sadly my internet use is very rarely research-useful…

I have Firefox (v. 10) for personal use and much prefer it to Chrome which I use for work (so that I can easily have at least 2 mail accounts open). The only problem I have with using Firefox beta is that the updates occasionally kill my add-ins – the minute I can clip things to Evernote again, there's an update and it stops working. My bookmarks bars look very dull compared to yours though!

I did always prefer Firefox, mostly for aesthetic reasons, but it's so useless on my computer at the moment – it won't stay open for more than half a minute. If they fix it, I'll be back!
