I’m going to take a blogging break while I go on holiday (again, burglars, someone is looking after my cat so it’s no good trying to break in) – before I go, I’ll leave you with a few bits and pieces:
- Thanks to everyone who was praying for my sermon – I was particularly anxious because I got Covid that week too, but thankfully was recovered in time to share the talk on John 9. And if you’d like to watch it, you can on my church’s website!
- It’s #SpinsterSeptember! Nora aka pear.jelly is hosting this month-long celebration of spinsters in fiction and non-fiction. The idea really seems to have taken off – I’m starting with Mary Olivier by May Sinclair, but I would also recommend The Love-Child by Edith Olivier, Sally on the Rocks by Winifred Boggs, Father by Elizabeth von Arnim, War Among Ladies by Eleanor Scott, Life and Death of Harriett Frean by May Sinclair, Matty and the Dearingroydes by Richmal Crompton, The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne by Brian Moore, May Sinclair’s journals, Patricia Brent, Spinster by Herbert Jenkins… so many wonderful options.
- Karen has reviewed Sing Me Who You Are by Elizabeth Berridge from British Library Woman Writers series
- A blog I’ve only recently discovered – Nancy at Living on Life’s Labyrinth reviews Father by Elizabeth von Arnim
Happy reading – see you in a bit!
Thanks for the link, Simon, and have a lovely break! :D
I did! :D
I’m pleased to hear prayers were answered regarding your recent sermon and very best wishes for a great time in Vancouver and Toronto.
Thanks for the link to SpinsterSeptember. I needed some reading purpose and inspiration and I already have some of the titles on my tbr pile as well as having enjoyed some of the others you mentioned already. I also hope to reread the Jane Gardam for the next teaorbooks. I read them several years ago but have good memories of them.
I really love Father too.
Thanks Sarah – I haven’t done very well on Spinster September reading, but I’m hoping it becomes an annual event.
Simon, I just listened to your sermon. I am an Orthodox Christian and did not expect to be so moved, as well as impressed by your insights and erudition. Your book recommendations have significantly brightened my reading life, and now my admiration has grown deeper. Thank you – and have a good vacation!
that means so much, thank you Tess!
Enjoy B.C Simon. I have a few Vancouver books I’ve looked for you if you still need suggestions. Five Little Indians by Michelle Good, The Man Game by Lee Henderson and Disappearing Moon Cafe by Sky Lee.
Take care and happy holidays. 😀🇨🇦
I couldn’t remember where these suggestions were when I visited, so failed to buy them – but maybe next time!!
I appreciated your sermon very much, Simon. I thought you did a good exposition of the text, as well as providing a meaningful and hopefully provoking challenge to your listeners. It was a beautiful message. (I should add that I am just an enthusiastic amateur when it comes to Scripture and theology; I teach the 4 & 5-year-olds Sunday School class, not the adults!) Anyway, well done, and enjoy your time away!
That is so kind, I really appreciate it, thank you!
I loved your sermon.
Thank you so much, Vicky!
Have a lovely break Simon!
It was fab!
I’m so excited for Spinster September! I finished a Miss Silver on Monday and am reading High Wages by Dorothy Whipple for the first time.
I’m so glad you recovered enough to preach! Thank you for sharing the link to your sermon. You’ll be several hours north of me when you’re in Vancouver! I live in Vancouver, WA, but everyone always thinks it’s Vancouver, BC. I wish!
Oh I can imagine that gets confusing!
Ooh spinsters, excellent! I suppose there was the one in Introduction to Sally … And thank you for the link to my review of One Year’s Time. Happy hols!
All year is Spinster September in my book!
Ooooh, I love the idea of spinsters in fiction! What a great theme! Have a wonderful holiday, hope your kitty doesn’t miss you too much 😽
I missed him so much, but he probably coped better than me :D
