That came around faster than I was expecting! It is, indeed, Shirley Jackson Reading Week – hosted by me, Jenny, and Ana – and we’d love you to join in! Pick up anything at all by Shirley Jackson, read it, review it, and send one of us the links. If you don’t have a blog, you’re welcome to add mini reviews in the comments.
If you want suggestions, just yell!
http://desperatereader.blogspot.co.uk/2015/07/the-sundial-shirley-jackson.html I read The Sundial, it was a revelation. Hoping to manage another one by the end of the week.
The Haunting of Hill House has been a favorite of mine since I read it as a teenager back in the 1960s. We had to read The Lottery in school and that we my introduction to Jackson. It wasn’t until later that I discovered her other books, including the wonderfully funny Raising Demons and Life Among the Savages, which you reviewed brilliantly on SNB. They made me laugh out loud, maybe, like you, because I don’t have children but can sometimes appreciate them from a distance. A few parents should weigh in on these! I hope new readers will read Jackson and appreciate her.
I missed or forgot the announcement, but have brought an old review back to life for the occasion. http://harrietdevine.typepad.com/harriet_devines_blog/2015/07/we-.html
I’ve written about a short story, ‘Paranoia’, on my blog, here: http://gallimaufry.typepad.com/blog/2015/07/paranoia-by-shirley-jackson.html It was my first Shirley Jackson.
But since then I have read ‘We Have Always Lived in the Castle’ and am now full of ire that I don’t have any of her other books. I’m looking forward to reading other people’s thoughts…
I read The Daemon Lover and then couldn’t stop writing about it! It’s an interesting one, lots to unpack:

I’ve opted for The Sundial – review here. Loved it!
I managed to reread & post about We Have Always Lived in the Castle just in the nick of time! :)

I read the SJ short story “Mrs. Melville Makes a Purchase” as part of my weekly short story reading project (it just came up randomly this week, as if it new about the Shirley Jackson Reading Week!). My post, which also has links to a couple prior Jackson posts of mine is at https://bibliophilica.wordpress.com/2015/07/20/mrs-melville-makes-a-purchase-shirley-jackson/
