Making My Mark

Once or twice on Stuck-in-a-Book I’ve talked about my little foibles when it comes to bookmarks.  Click back on those links to find out more (especially the first one, which gives a few examples) – basically, I like my bookmarks and books to fit together, by theme or colour.

And I was especially pleased by the bookmark/book combination that’s currently on my bedside table… so I had to share it with you.

Not only are Jane Bowles’ short stories shaping up to be pretty stunning (thanks Sort Of Books for sending it to me!) but just look how well the postcard from Blackwell co-ordinates with the image of the woman on the front.

It’s the little things in life that please me…

You're easily pleased. That is, however, a fabulous combination. :)

Haha! It's odd how much this did please me… and I hadn't even spotted that both feature two birds!

The cover works really well with their cover for Two Serious Ladies (also Jane Bowles) – but the postcard is supremely beautiful, partly because it reminds me of my favourite place in the world.

Oh, Simon, you are a delight.

Could you bottle your bookish joie de vivre? I'd be first in line for a crateload of your gloriously enthusiastic and ever curious approach to life!

Loved this post, Simon. My sister and I collect bookmarks, and try to match them to what we're reading. A few weeks ago I came across, in a book she had culled from her library and given to me on the chance I'd want to try it, a lovely bookmark. I thought its presence in a discarded book was a mistake, and when I gave it back to her she was so pleased! It had been one of her favorites, and she had lost track of it a couple years before, and had gone through her entire collection of markers several times, looking for it. She had finally given it up as gone for good. We were both delighted that she had this little treasure back at last. The little things really DO add zest to life… like pepper in the soup.

Oh how nice! A lovely reunion.
And a very apt analogy, especially since I love peppering soup (to the extent that most people won't eat it…)

That's lovely – I hadn't thought of colour coordinating them! I like to do it thematically if I can, and I have some bookmarks that live in their books if I've decided that the combination is just right – sometimes it's a postcard of a painting that's referred to in the book, or a scene of a place that's mentioned. There's an additional pleasure when I go back to a book and find that I had forgotten that it has become the repository for the perfect bookmark.

I remember Pam saying, last time I did something like this, that she's trying to keep an apt bookmark in every book she reads – isn't it a lovely thought?

I foresee a new avenue for present-giving the world over. I will get in on the ground floor and start creating them NOW!
Or just as soon as I have drunk this coffee and finished this book!

ha! Well, it would make a lovely accompaniment to a present, wouldn't it? I'm sure you've done that before!

Absolutely! Such fun indeed! (Which makes me wonder which postcard I used whilst reading Miranda's autobiography…)

I have a similar obsession with bookmarks. I have a large collection of art postcards from various museums and enjoy selecting the perfect match for whatever book I am reading. I had one Persephone bookmark that I used constantly for awhile until I accidentally forgot it on the treadmill at the gym. I was more upset about losing that bookmark than the jacket I left behind that same day!

Oh that made me smile! (A sympathetic smile, of course.) I do love that blog readers and bloggers understand this whim of mine – few others would.

I love that idea and will try to copy it when I choose a book as a present the next time (which I do quite often). Thanks for the inspiration.

That is quite the combination! I, too, am picky about my bookmarks. I think the picture on this one might distract me though…I'd want to crawl into it. :)

Blackwell (the building with that window) *is* the most stunningly beautiful place, especially on a bright day. If you ever get the chance…

What a serendipitous pairing! I love that you use postcards as bookmarks. I really must adopt this method.

Ooh, they are lovely…a perfect pairing! I'm strangely drawn to that hat and I can't decide if it's because it's sort of spooky or just a little bit cool.
My favourite bookmark was rescued from our 'lost bookmark' basket at the library. I hate to think that someone is missing it, but it's being adored nonetheless.

You would totally rock that hat, Darlene!
And I'm glad the bookmark has been adopted by a kind family :)
