Room With A View

A while ago I posted a photo of the view from my room in Magdalen College. Well, now that I’m at home in Somerset, you get to see a different view. Rather different, and the thing I like best about our house. Sadly only one of the bedrooms has a view as nice as this – thankfully, it’s mine! When we moved here, the Carbon Copy was allowed to choose the room… and I helped him, by making it clear that I wanted this one. I’ve always liked him….

While we’re talking about The Carbon Copy, please join me in congratulating him – today he received the news that he got a FIRST in his Maths degree at Warwick. Champagne all round, or would be, if he drank.

Stuck-in-a-Book’s results next week…

Gorgeous view. And congratulations to The Carbon Copy! Excuse me, but may I ask is there such a thing as a second, or third? What does that mean?

Congrats to carbon copy — great achievement (speaking as someone who got 20% in maths O-level after a year of private coaching). The view is lovely — which bit of Somerset are you in?

Thank you for the explanation! I’d read of firsts, but never knew exactly how it all worked.

You’re not near the Blackdown Hills, are you? (My parents-in-law live in Luppitt.)

I had no idea, Karen, but apparently we are about 15 miles away, according to Dad! I’ve only lived here a couple of years, and spent most of that at university, so I still don’t know these sorts of things…

Harriet-we’re in a village called Chiselborough, which noone has heard of! Near Crewkerne, if that rings any bells.

Congratulations to the Carbon Copy! For American visitors, I think the equivalent of a First is “Summa cum laude” (with the highest praise / honour”): perhaps someone could throw some light on that?

What a lovely view. It looks so quiet and peaceful. Congrats to the Carbon Copy–I take it he is not as fond of books as you are?
