Song for a Sunday

I bought Stand Still by Emma’s Imagination (who won some music TV programme in the UK) because she covered an obscure song by Bic Runga on it – I thought anybody who liked Bic Runga definitely had good taste, and might write well too. Whilst I enjoy the album, this cover of Runga’s ‘Drive’ is still the highlight.

A while ago I thought to myself, “I bet I would like a singer who would name their album Happenstance.” And so I searched to see if any artist had, and came across Rachael Yamagata – my reasoning was not wrong; I did like Rachael. I especially like this song, ‘Worn Me Down’. Enjoy your Bank Holiday weekend!

I’ve been really enjoying your One Book, Two Book… posts – do let me know if you’ve done one, they’re such fun to read!

Following in the steps of last week, I thought I’d post a couple of songs from an artist you think you know… but might not. Alanis Morissette is generally known as an angry, strident singer – but my favourite tracks of hers are very quite different from that. Here they are: ‘That I Would Be Good’ and ‘That Particular Time’ Obviously I like songs which begin with the word ‘That’…

Some unashamed summery pop music today, I think, in a bid to encourage the sun to shine. A Fine Frenzy has released two albums – this is from her second, Bomb in a Birdcage. It’s perhaps not my favourite from the album, but I do love the video, and the song is lively and fun. Here is ‘Electric Twist’ – enjoy!

The only good thing to come from watching the awful film Wedding Daze was hearing a track in the background that I loved… I hunted it down, and thus began my love of folk-indie-rocky band Hem and the beautiful voice of Sally Ellyson. Here is that song, ‘The Fire Thief’ from the album Eveningland – one of my favourite albums. Enjoy!

I couldn’t find a non-live version of this song on YouTube, so I went and made my first ever Movie Maker video. And when I say ‘made’, I mean I typed a few words onto a picture I took on holiday in 2009, and then put the song on it. I had no idea it was that easy. They might have just unleased a monster…

The song is ‘Seafarer’ by Kate Walsh (not the American actress, btw), from the beautiful album Light & Dark. Enjoy!
