Song for a Sunday

The Thomas family is reunited down in Somerset, and we have spent the past two evenings performing in the Chiselborough Christmas Cracker – a variety show which makes up in enthusiasm what it lacks in rehearsal time, and is jolly good fun. We did our own spin on the famous Monty Python ‘Spanish Inquisition’ sketch, with Col and I taking the roles of the Cardinals. Somehow it involved me doing a Scottish accent… I am just grateful that nobody in the audience was Scottish, because accents are not my strong suit. When it comes to acting, I have yet to find my strong suit – unless hearty enjoyment is one.

Anyway, this is a preamble to say how Christmassy I’m now feeling, and that’s why this week’s Sunday Song isn’t my usual pick of a lesser-known artist, but rather a rendition of my favourite carol. It’s In the Bleak Midwinter sung – why not? – by lovely Julie Andrews.

I can’t believe I haven’t featured the wonderful Bic Runga here yet. She’s very well known in her native New Zealand, but rather less so further afield. ‘Say After Me’ is from her third album, Birds.

This seems appropriate because it is *so* cold here… I was typing away in the freezing computer room at Magdalen, wearing gloves when I was reading, and taking them off to do the typing… anyway, this song’s title is appropriate. And it’s beautiful, and sometimes makes me cry… I can only find live versions (this one is synced to the original video) but… it’ll have to do! Step forward Tori Amos, with ‘Winter’.

I’ll give an update on yesterday’s fun activities soon – but for today let’s have another Sunday Song.

Quite a few of you probably know the actress Minnie Driver – what might be less well known is that she’s released two lovely albums: Everything I’ve Got in My Pocket and Seastories. This is the title track from the former:

I found out about Amelia Curran from the rather brilliant website notpop.co.uk, and have gone on to get – and love – three of her albums. Hoping to track down the first two, but they’re near impossible to locate.

Today’s track is from her most recent album Hunter, Hunter. It’s called ‘The Mistress’ and I get more from it everytime I listen – really thoughtful lyrics. This is a live version, which I usually don’t like that much, but this one works – and, plus, I can’t find any recorded version of ‘The Mistress’ online.
