While roaming DC, I was mostly listening to Brandi Carlile on my iPod. I bought one of her albums about 8 years ago, and finally got around to listening to some more. Here are a couple of her songs, to show her both a bit rocky and more contemplative…

I don’t love The Beatles, I have to confess… but this version of Let It Be by Aretha Franklin is incredible.

Love this: Iron Sky by Paolo Nutini
Song for a Sunday
Happy Sunday, everyone. I’ll be spending much of it writing a conference paper, as I’ve been silly and left it til late in the day… but that isn’t a good reason to mope when you can be reliving your teenage years with a slice of All Saints. This song, I argue, is underratedly classy.

One of my favourite singers, Sia, has hit the big time of late – and writes for basically everyone – but she saves her best and most emotional songs for herself. Here’s a couple of recent releases I can’t stop listening to… ‘Chandelier’ and ‘Eye of the Needle’.

A lot of people turn their nose up at singers on reality shows, but you might quite like Sally Barker… she toured with Bob Dylan and the like, but had to quit when her husband died and she had to raise her children. Well, thank The Voice that she’s back; I’ve rarely heard a singer who can put this much emotion in a song. She reminds me a bit of Joni Mitchell – appropriately, since she was in a band called the Joni Mitchell Project.

This has been my jam this week:

More from singing shows… this was already one of my favourite songs, and this girl on The Voice did a beautiful job with it.
Song for a Sunday
Well, last Sunday I posted a new track from an artist who hasn’t even released an album yet (although she has found fame on the X Factor) and nobody commented, so I thought I’d try something different this week ;)
It’s rare that I like old male bands (new female singer-songwriters being my bag) but I do like the Eagles, and I love Desperado… and I suspect you do too. Indulge.

It’s been a while, hasn’t it?
I didn’t watch the X Factor last series, but the one before that had a great singer called Ella Henderson – she’s now got around to recording some songs, and I’m a fan of ‘Five Tattoos’. Enjoy!
