Song for a Sunday

Saturday night was a big barn dance for my parents’ wedding anniversary and my Mum’s birthday, with about 100 people coming.  Fun!  The celebrations continue today, and so I shall put up ‘their song’ – chosen some time into their marriage, but appropriate nonetheless.  Here’s Shania Twain and ‘You’re Still The One’.

When you see this, I’ll be in Bristol with Colin – he might be talking to me, or he might be watching the Olympics – I hope you’re all having lovely weekends too!

Goldfrapp are (I think) best known for up-tempo, disco-type songs (are they?) but this track, A&E, is wonderfully calming and very appropriate for a Sunday Song.  Enjoy!

Song for a Sunday

A lovely lady called Diana got in touch with me a while ago to recommend Christian artist Sara Groves as a Sunday Song singer.  Well, I know and love Groves’ album The Other Side of Something, but Diana sent a few links to more recent songs, and I liked them.  I picked ‘Childhood Summer’ more or less at random, because it seemed appropriate for the last-ditch effort at summer we’ve been having this weekend.  Thanks, Diana!

Like everyone else in the world, it seems, I have Adele’s albums.  I bought 19 after hearing her beautiful cover of ‘Make You Feel My Love’ at my cousin’s wedding.  Well, little did I know that, buried deep in my iTunes, I had a duet called ‘Water and a Flame’ which Adele sang with Daniel Merriweather on his album Love & War.  And it’s rather nice.

Colin, my brother, recently described something (I forget what) as “like your Song for a Sunday – people wish it wasn’t there.”  To heap coals on his head, today’s song is one he told me about.  We don’t share a taste in music any more than we share a taste in books, but occasionally there is something we both like – step forward ‘Rainy Days and Mondays’ by The Carpenters.

This is where I fully anticipate losing half my regular readers, but… yes, I watch Glee.  I think it’s half dreadful and half entertaining (well, that ratio slips and slides) but occasionally they do rather interesting versions of great songs.  I love ‘Shake it Out’ by Florence and the Machine – indeed, it’s been a Sunday Song before – and I also love Glee’s take on it, below.

And, er, yeah I love Shakespeare and stuff too.  So don’t judge.  Ok, you can.  A bit.
