Tea or Books? #111: Do We Care What Characters Look Like? And Good Behaviour vs Full House

Molly Keane, M.J. Farrell, and characters’ appearances – welcome to episode 111!

In the first half, Rachel and I discuss what characters look like – do we care, do we notice if it’s mentioned, etc. In the second half, we look at two novels by Molly Keane – one under her pseudonym of M.J. Farrell – Good Behaviour and Full House.

Your comments about characters’ appearances and behaviors was interesting to me as I am reading Red Pottage by Mary Cholmondeley at the moment and had just yesterday commented to my son about how strongly the author (and other Victorian authors) correlate the two. Kind of jarring even though it’s not my first novel of the era by a long shot.

Hi Simon and Rachel! Thank you so much for answering my domestic details question :) I really love Mrs. Miniver and I’ve read almost all of Dorothy Whipple’s books. I’ve read a bunch of Elizabeth Taylor, but I should definitely read more of hers. I haven’t tackled Viriginea Woolf yet…for some reason, I feel very intimidated by her books. But, I own To The Lighthouse and Mrs. Dalloway, so I’m sure I’ll dive into them at some point. Another awesome podcast episode! 🥰❤️📚
