Ok, I’ll admit, I got halfway through a review of the latest book I read, and didn’t find the energy to finish it… so I thought I’d try a little thing ‘Through the Years’, which could be fun to try if you’ve been blogging for a little while.
I’ve done a ‘what was I reading on this date’ meme before a few times, but I thought I’d bring blogging into it as well.
I’m going to look back at the posts I’ve done for a certain date over the past few years. Obviously this will work better post-May, as I started blogging in April 2007, but (to get the ball rolling) here’s what February 22nd looked like in the past…
– in 2009, I was reading Making History by Brian Friel, and blogging about the idea of getting recommendations from other bloggers
– in 2008, I was reading Yes Man by Danny Wallace, and blogging about families of writers
– in 2007, I was reading The Philosophy of the Short Story by Brander Matthews
– in 2006, I was reading… nothing, it appears! Gosh, I only read one book in Feburary 2006, and that was a play by Aphra Behn.
– in 2005, I was reading The Collection by Harold Pinter
– in 2004, I was reading The Young Visiters [sic] by Daisy Ashford
– in 2003, I was reading David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
– in 2002, I was reading The Moody Man by John Milne
Have a go yourself!
This is only my second year blogging so I can't look back too far but I thought it was funny to see that at this time in 2009 I was reading Dickens' Oliver Twist and currently in 2010 I am reading Great Expectations. February seems to be my month for Dickens:)
I love doing this sort of thing. I have reading records that go back to May of 1987, but I won't go back that far here. Feb. 22, '96, I had a two-day old baby girl, so I'm sure I wasn't reading anything but the back of my eyeballs. More recently, '09 – Flaubert's Madame Bovary; '08 – Dutch Sheets' Intercessory Prayer; '07 – E. B. White's Stuart Little; '06 – Steve Saint's End of the Spear; '05 – E. H. Porter's Just David; '04 – Freedman's Lincoln: A Photobiography; '03 – Susan Cooper's Silver On the Tree; and, '02 – Eugene Peterson's A Long Obedience in the Same Direction. So, it looks like at this week in February I tend to be in Christian non-fiction or children's fiction. (With the exception of Flaubert.) Fun exercise!
Since I only started blogging in January – I think that this wuold be more than m little brain could cope with – however – it is a most inpiring game and I hope to be able to play in the future!
How bizarre, Simon … I was just thinking of writing a post along these lines! Based on my reading journal I was reading On Beauty by Zadie Smith in '07, Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons in '08 and in '09 it was Lady Rose & Mrs Memmary by Ruby Ferguson.
Great selection, Claire! Feel free to spread the word on your blog, of course, especially since you were planning on doing something similar
You come up with some the most interesting ideas, Simon. Taking a look back I see that I was reading Consequences by EM Delafield this time last year. That's all that I can report I'm afraid but found your longer list pretty impressive.
