Which year shall we read next?

What a fun week we’ve had with the 1930 Club! I’m always amazed by the number of people who get involved, and the diversity of books that we manage to read between us. This week we’ve had novels, poetry, essays, non-fiction, work in translation – all sorts. But, for once, no Simenon! Turns out he didn’t publish until 1931.

We’re already thinking about the next club, which will be sometime next April. And we’re turning over to suggestions – anything between 1920 and 1980 is up for grabs, if we haven’t done it already. So if you have any preference for a particular day, please let us know in the comments. Karen and I will draw out of a hat later – or could be won over by any especially persuasive rationale for a year…

May I suggest 1952 or 53, I really like the 50s in literature and there would be lots of great choices.

Thanks once again for co-hosting another fantastic event. It was lovely to see all the 1903s-related reviews and tweets flying around the web, especially given all the controversy with the Booker!

I’d like to second Ali’s suggestion. Any year in the ’50s would be of interest to me, particularly given all the social changes following the end of WW2.

I love the 1950s so any of those years would be fine with me. Barbara Pym wrote Excellent Women (of which I am not ashamed to say I have three copies…mostly rescued from charity shop shelves) in 1952. Just saying…

I agree with Kay…..teens or earlier. Why not start with 1900?

Any year is good for me, I just enjoy being surprised by the range of books – eg I had no idea that Leslie Charteris was even writing in 1930, and I thought Swallows and Amazons dated from the 1950s.

It looks like you’ve only done one in the 20s and one in the 50s – both good decade choices.
Thanks to both you and Karen for organizing this past week. It was so interesting to read all the posts.
